10/31/2007 Talking about Halloween Myths Quiz - MSN EncartaAnother Halloween, another quiz Quote I got a 9/10 on this one, (Results here http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/quiz/quiz.aspx?QuizID=283&qpt=results) Some things about this quiz... (Spoilers so don't read below until AFTER you take the quiz!) I enjoy taking these quizes, testing usless information is a hobby of mine. Besides trival pursuit there is little else this welth of usless information comes in handy for!
Happy Halloween '07As is tradition for Halloween we have a pumpin, a small one, and I even got some candy... just in case. We are carving the pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern and roasting pumpkin seeds, something I have done every year, except for my Navy years, since I was 5. I love Halloween, not in the decorating and costume wearing kind of way, but more for the traditional meaning of the holiday. Two years ago I wrote about the commercialization of Halloween, some day soon I will write about the tradition of it. Now most people mistakingly associate Halloween with devil worshiping, when it is actually older then Christanity in Europe and is actually an old Pegan harvest festival and time of rememberance.
The seasons have changed, the big and bright harvest moons are gone and as the nights cool and all the hard work of the summer is now over and its time to hunker in and enjoy the fruits of that labor during the shorter days and longer and colder nights. As I know there will be knocks on my door, Chinese on the main land still don't know what or why Halloween or its traditions exist, here it is more of a young adult excuse to go out to bars on theme nights dressed up in costume and drink as much as they can afford. As Sophia is not even 9 months yet, and in Guangzhou, we are having a low key Halloween. Jack-o-lantern, roasted pumpkin seeds, scarry movies, and some candy I picked up to top off the evening.
So to all those out there in the festive spirit, Happy Halloween and 'trick or treat'!
PS - I am over the limit for pictures this month so I will post many pictures in November. 10/27/2007 Sports jinxes and news updatePeople in sports believe in jinxes, it was just this week or so that some news organization found 40% of baseball fans believed in them. Now I can’t remember the outlet or the date but I do remember hearing it. Any sports fan will fear a jinx, and will try to avoid them at all costs. Well, I have been living on the not so safe side of the tracks for most of my life so here it goes…
After just over 1/3 of the NFL season and I am batting .667 in my Lions picks, and batting a smoking 1.00 for the record of wins vs. losses thus far. Now I have been out of the US for 2 football seasons, and missed 2 drafts, and have not been exposed to the flapping heads at ESPN or ESPN radio, but a little common sense and knowledge can go a long way.
I got a pig-skin my last trip to Chicago and have been teaching Coco how to pass and catch. She is doing pretty good I must add, much better at catching after just 2 lessons then most jr. high kids I have seen or played with when I played at that age. Her passing is about where it should be, and it is improving, she can even throw decent spirals now and up to 20 yards!
On to other things, the mortgage mess is continuing to snowball, most peoples stingers, kickers, or whatever they are called kicked in this month and will continue for the next 6 months, doubling many peoples mortgages and causing this housing problem to grow. The real problem is this. So many of peoples mortgages are no longer held at the banks but have been sold, resold, repackaged and sold, and then finally resold yet again so there is no one to talk to talk to to try to get keep your head above water and your house off the auction block. I hate it for all those folks, but lets not forget, who signed the sub-prime mortgage in the first place and the reason so many had to use them was because the bank would not finance them because of their credit. There was a reason for that and just because you found a lender does not mean you deserved the house at that moment of your life.
Beijing was hit by record breaking smog today, airports closed, old people and kids told to stay inside, fog and smog so thick visibility was down to 40 yards all over the city. Not a good thing to have happen 10 months before a ‘green and clean’ Olympics. Long time readers will notice I quite blogging about air quality here in Shanghai. The beginning of the year was pretty bad, the air quality here the first 4 months of the year was really bad, some days spiked above 3 times the highest limits of the highest threshold. In the remaining 6 months however, the air quality has dramatically improved. The number of green days, low air pollution, have far exceeded the yellow days, moderate air pollution, and the there have been no orange days, heavy air pollution or red days… don’t ask.
Space shuttle Discovery has passed her preliminary heat shield check and is working on getting Harmony installed and moving one of the solar arrays from its temporary position to its permanent location on the outboard truss. This will make way for further expansion with the EU Columbus and Japanese Kibo scientific modules. China joined in the big show by launching a lunar explorer satellite just as Japan’s began orbiting the moon and surveying the surface.
People like to live in nature, beautiful views and peaceful surroundings. Unfortunately these views come with a price. In Florida there are lightning strikes and hurricanes, in northern California its earthquakes. In the Midwest its tornadoes and seasonal flooding. In southern California its wildfires. Years of drought and stopping the practice of controlled burns due to housing developments being placed in areas where the danger was the most. Urban sprawl is biting back, and in a very costly and tragic manner. The moment we lose respect for anything is the moment it will bite us in the butt. 10/24/2007 Space Race 2.0This week is pretty busy for space and science buffs. "Space, the final frontier..." as the famous prologue that started each Star Trek episode is the emphasis of this article. As America celebrates yet another shuttle launch with Discovery making a noon accent in a seemingly all to routine series of events another launch is being conducted tonight APA time. Before Discovery can rendezvous with the International Space Station and have her heat shield tiles checked prior to delivering the Harmony module another space craft will be orbiting the planet. Chang'e I, the Chinese lunar surveying satellite will be flying a year long mapping and surveying mission, but not alone, a Japanese satellite, Kaguya, is in a 60 mile (100Km) orbit around the moon after blasting off on September 14th and beginning its mission October 4th. Just as Sputnik, ironically launched just a few weeks over 50 years ago, issued in the mother of all spaces between Cold War rivals the Soviet Union and the United States. The overtones of Japan's launch, delayed 4 years but still technologically way ahead of Russia's Luna and the US's Clementine and Lunar Prospector projects was the first salvo which tonight was answered by China and next April will be answered by India who is launching their own lunar explorer satellite, Chandrayan 1. Historically speaking the past space race, or space race 1.0 between the USSR and the USA was little more then trying to prove which country was superior, economically, scientifically, and militarily. While it was highlighted by many changing positions and tragedies it did advance science, understanding, and ultimately elevated mankind into the realistic possibilities that space exploration was realistic and no longer science fiction. Of course the US ultimately won with numerous lunar landings and missions giving all huge amounts of information about our closest celestial neighbor. Sixty years later Russia and America are not only partners, but majority contributors to the ISS efforts which are bringing together many countries scientists together into a collaborative effort to advance science yet again. Now, this year, we are witnessing the rebirth of the space race, now between 2 of the most populous countries on the planet and the richest technologically advanced country in Asia. This contest has all the same tones and markings of the last, but with the wisdom of how the last one ended, albeit I doubt that will be taken into consideration or even pondered as the players are too arrogant to head the lessons of the past 50 years. Modern Asia is a kaleidoscope of differences. There are no doubts the top nations are Japan, with technology and industry that is tried and true, China, with a decade's worth of double digit economic growth feeding a population and government capable of achieving anything they want, and India, with strong ties to the West and a wealth of human resources and history of science, all are leading the next space race for a claim at national superiority and advances that will prove they are not only better then their rivals, but better then the old men who have rested on their laurels and let 30 years of complacency erode the momentum and advances they had built up over just a short 20 years of breakneck advances. Japan has probably the most noble motives, science and exploration above their reputation, although they would love to trump China, their long time rivals, and regain their past prestige of being Asia's premiere civilization. China is sore over its 40 year hibernation and is quickly emerging as the 500 pound gorilla in the room and is longing for the respect and fear that accompanies the superpower status they feel they have been cheated out of since forming the communist regime 50 years ago. India, the worlds largest democracy, is intent on showing determination and hard work can pay off in the long run as it leverages its allies and human resources to built the capital necessary to join the race and establish itself as worthy of being a regional and world power, remember they do have nuclear weapons too. Yes indeed, Asia is in a full blown race for the moon, winner gets first pickings on a close celestial body and prime real estate that could be full of much needed resources and territory for further space exploration in the future. In the previous modern space era, that of the US and Russia, the tense race cooled to a collaborative truce of sorts where Russians ride on US space shuttles and American payloads are shot into space on Russian space vehicles. The race has cooled, it is not over but it has cooled to the point of allowing both countries to work together in an effort not imagined 50 years ago. Over the past 7 years the International Space Station has been a mutual collaborative effort by both the US and Russia, or at least their respective space agencies. The ISS has a purpose of advancing our science and understanding of the effects of space and how we can prepare for extended stays in space. The science of the station is shared, the findings published for others to learn from. Now it is true that there are still state based secretes each country is keeping under wraps and sciences they are working on in private, however the ISS is fairly transparent in its mission and its findings, a shinning example of sharing and spreading the wealth of opportunities to countries who do not have the opportunity or capability to do so at this time. Friendship, partnership, and the thirst for knowledge are all exhibited by the ISS. What are China's space ambitions? That is the $100,000 question everyone has been trying to answer for 35 years now. China is taking their space destiny into their own hands, exampled by their steps thus far, and their published time tables. It is odd how the press, exampled by 2 of the articles I have attached below, point out the negative more so then the positive. Sure, China has military and economic reasons behind their space program, as well as good old fashioned patriotism. China has proven they can put satellites into space, people, and even shoot down satellites with land based missiles, no one else can claim that. China wants to put a man on the moon in 15 to 20 years (that is 2022 to 2027, Japan is aiming for 2025, as is the United States and India has not given a date just strongly hinted at it). China, having the largest population and needing more energy when less is available is hungry to be on the forefront of any new energy discoveries without having to depend on others to facilitate its retrieval, look at their efforts in Africa. This is not an evil or uncharacteristic reason for lunar exploration. All countries want to be able to make their claims on any discoveries the moon has hidden, as long as they aren't long rectangular black blocks that emit high pitched noises. China is still a secretive and communist country, they have secrets and military as well as monopoly minded motives behind their actions. Instead of opting to share in the ISS China plans to build its own space station to conduct its own experiments. China's pride and resistance to share is going to become a larger problem as globalization become more and more engrained in the near future. China needs to remember that the strict control they enjoyed for most of their history will no longer be possible and that goes even more for space exploration. 30 years ago it would have been thought that the US or Russia would be racing to militarize space, bringing conflict beyond our planet, now China looks to be on track for doing so. From independent space stations, the US had sky lab and the Russians Mir, to anti-satellite killing missiles China is now the one everyone else has trust issues with. China's emergence into the space club has been very short. Both Russia and the US have been playing one-ups-manship since the 1950's and have evolved into mature space program states capable of achieving any goal scientifically possible. China started getting their feet wet in 1970 by getting a satellite into space. Unfortunately just 2 years later the program was shut down due to financial and other internal issues. Efforts did not begin again until 20 years later after China opened up a bit, began capitalizing on a fledging market based economy model and gaining some scientific curiosity, something hard line communism does not allow. Just 13 years later, 2003, China joining Russia and the United States as being the only country to put a human into space and retrieve them. In a short 2 years China emulated the 1960's Gemini program and got 2 taikonauts, Chinese for astronauts, into Earth orbit for 5 days. Now just 2 years later this weeks lunar mapping mission is underway, and by 2012 they expect to have one of 2 rovers on the moon's surface (hoping to beat Japan at this as well). While Japan has a mature program, economic and financial problems, as well as a couple of high profile failures, have slowed their efforts and now given China the small crack in the door they needed to barge in and ruin their party. With double digit economic growth for over a decade, strengthening one-party control, massive cash and trade reserves, and nearly endless human resources China has the perfect recipe to win the new space race. So now we have looked at all this data from hopefully a balanced viewpoint what are the implementations? If China wins what do they get? Pride in being the most advanced, powerful, scientific, richest, and spoils of space... well, sure they will get this but in today's world of 'what have you done for me lately' and cutting edge everything it may last only 3 to 5 years. If China is the first to colonize the moon will they get all the good real-estate and potential minerals? I bet the UN has already thought of this, thanks to Russia and the US and their past ambitions, and there is a mechanism in place to fairly handle moon colonization. While China may be the short tem winners, their isolationist efforts and actions are hampering continuing this momentum for long. The Americans last were on the moon in 1972 when Apollo 17 came home and have studied it for 30 years, so if something really valuable was up there don't you think we would have gotten it by now? The moon is more a propaganda prize then anything else. Japan is already trying to explore Mars, as well as the US, Europe, and Russia. While the moon is an important next step, and one that will cement China's ability as being able to do something their big brother and patriarch never could, it is the efforts of the ISS and mars explorations that hold the future of mankind in space. The moon will be a good launching pad for space exploration, but we have to take the lessons of how we are dealing with this planet and not repeat them on the moon. There is no doubt the next space race is well underway, and at stake is the pride and prestige of an entire region, and possible more. The winners will be announced in 20 to 25 years, and that boys and girls in a very long way away, and if history teaches us anything it teaches us that long term national plans are as concrete as long and the present can sustain its current trajectory into the future and our modern global world is no longer that static or stable. One is for sure, man kind only performs great feats of accomplishment under great pressure. This space race 2.0 will provide pressure from Asia's richest, most technologically advanced, and most proud nations into a competitive match many will watch and some may even join in on, and that will make us all better for the advances that come out of the contest. Resources and interesting articles: 10/17/2007 There is hope in America, and then theres notWell, as everyone stopping by in the past few days knows I have been pretty relentless over the Armenian vote going from the House Foreign Affairs committee to the full floor of the House or Representatives endorsed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. As I am all for legislatures sticking to their guns and making stands of principle I am not for doing so at the expense of the security and support of our troops conducting combat operations, slapping the face of a key strategic and economic partner in the region and part of the Islamic world, and trying to throw a monkey wrench into the war machine because she can not acheive her goals through direct legislative means.
Cooler heads are prevailing as support for the non-binding resolution has fallen to the degree of making it almost not worth bringing to the floor. First the vote was close in the committee, 27 to 21. Five influential House Democrats have pulled their support for the resolution Wednesday evening. John Murtha, Alcee Hastings, Robert Wexler, John Tanner, and Steve Cohen all urges stopping the resolution citing national security issues. Six former co-sponsers have abandoned the resolution and if more jump ship then Hastings, a former supporter, stated that this may not be the right time to address this issue. The eight former Secretaries of State who oppose the resolution include Alexander Haig, Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger, Warren Christopher, Madeleine Albright, and Colin Powell signifying the broad spectrum of very intellegent people who know foreign policy better they anyone else in the country and their ideas on this matter run contrary to those of Pelosi and House Democrats who support this resolution.
On the left side of the argument is the assumption that we, America, can not stand on firm morle ground unless we point out each and every wrong others do, even if they are allies. First off, it was 1915. Second, there is not a clear 100% trail of proof it was what the resolution stated. What happened in Poland and elsewhere in Central Europe up to World War II was, and it was not until 1944 that the term genocide was even introduced, and the measure was not adopted by the UN until 1948 and not a 'crime' which could be prosecuted in international criminal trivunals until 1991, just in time for Bosnia. While it is vital we stand for freedom and oppose oppression and crimes against humanity, what purpose does it serve in the modern day world. Outside of symbolism not too much. The people responsible in Turkey are no longer in power, the damage was done, people got away with it and are dead now. Bosnia, Rwanda, Dufar, Cambodia are different, they happened since 1960 and people responsible are still alive and their crimes can be, and should be brought before them to answer to. Our credability in this matter is not hampered much by not standing up to this matter at this specific time in our global history. The hard part of world politics is the balancing act one has to do between allies and enemies, between maintaining relationships and morale compas. The world is not black and white and we can not assume we can paint it black and white to meet our internal interests.
The first 'baby boomer' has retired early, filed for Social Security marking the tip of the ice burg in the draining of the Social Security fund. The SSA today stated the benifits will increase for cost of living allowance, $24 a month on average. As my mother's generation begins to retire there will be much talk of the SSA going broke. What has been not reported is the generation behind mine, gen Y or whatever they call them selves, is only a small percentage behind that of my mother's in population. Add in the migrate workers, who are working legally and having taxes taken from their wages, the SSA should be able to weather the storm ok with only slight tinkering here and there. We are having a population explosion in the US, average families in the US is now 3 children and not 2 as it was of my generation. This means in 10 years this new large segment of the population will be entering the workforce and having taxes deducted therefore putting new funds into the SSA. The system still needs reform and oversight as well as better budgetting and prevention of fraud and abuse. I was always told to never expect Social Security to be around when I retired, and I have taken that to heart, but it seems these dooms day predictions were overstated. The Social Security Administration is in trouble, no doubt about it, but with proper leadership, sacrifice, and good policy we can overcome the issues and fix the issue, any issue we face. 10/16/2007 And the Hat Trick over TurkeyWhile checking stocks and the market I noticed oil is spiking now because of tentions with Turkey and the possible violance in now stable Northern Iraq. Thank you Nancy Pelosi, your principles have not only hurt our image, our military, our alleys in the region and one of the few Muslium alleys we have, you are now causing oil prices to go up at the same time refineries are about to switch to winter blends making gas prices go up which will impact consumers in not only their prices at the pump but also increasing pressures on shippers, farmers, airliners, plastic factory suppliers, everyone where the price of crude is crucial in our day to day lives. The ripples of these actions are now hurting the middle class and lower class Americans much more then before. While Turkey should be scolded over its past deeds a century ago and no time since 2002 has seemed the right time, why is now... this paticular instant so special? I believe I know the reasons and I have made them know all this week.
The politics in-fighting in this country is getting to be too much. When the battles begin to hurt the common man more then help the overall interest of the nation then it is time to stop the madness and correct the polorized mockery of our former political system. A nation lead by a divided government is not lead as much as it is paralized by the petty battles and power struggles of those who are fighting only for them selves and not the betterment of the nation or the world. We need inspiration, we need togetherness, we need healing, we need a leader who is commanding and uniting. We need mature responsible adults in our government, those with vision and the guts to take us as a nation to that vision. When will the insanity stop. When will we declair ourselves Americans first, leaders second, and party members last? Why does the public keep acting in the same predictable fasion of electing immature lyers again and again and expect a different outcome each time? 10/15/2007 Continuing to destroy America's image internationallyAnd the hits just keep on rolling!
I seem to remember some top Democrats in mid-term elections complaining about America's image abroad and how the current administration has damaged the reputation and alienated America by isolating us away from our alleys and supporters. How the Bush policies were breeding extreme hatred evidenced by demonstrations against our embassies, countries cutting diplomatic support, refusing to go along with our policies and recommendations. How trade and interests abroad were hurt by our inability to listen and diplomatically discuss differences of opinion in the correct and proper forum. Yes I remember the newly elected House of Representatives pledge to stop the isolating policies of the past and begin to reach out to those countries we had offended to regain trust, reputation, cooperation, and good will with. How they would heal the wounds of the war and stop the rhetoric of hate and condemnation that had garnered such hatred against the US across the globe.
While I can not recall the exact time or location of these statements I am sure they are not more then just a Google search away. So what is going on? France is our alley now... again, and being tougher then they have in decades on foreign policy. The coalition in the war is still here and support is shaky as before but holding. Top commanders in the field are now saying Al Qadea in Iraq is now paralyzed and nearly impotent. And despite the anti-war sentiment we are seen as we always have been overseas. Now Non-Stop Nancy is giving a key NATO alley a reason to have its citizens march on our embassy, burn our flag, chant anti-American slogans in the streets, recall its ambassador, make artillery strikes into a country we are fighting in, flying up to the border in their fighter air-craft, and their top generals and politicians have all decried the Speaker's actions as an attack on their national pride and sovereignty. Promises of base closure, port closure, and air space restrictions have been made. Thanks to the Democrats decision to have the House Foreign Affairs committee pass this 'non-binding' resolution declaring the 1915 Armenian deaths as genocide when the Turks don't know what a non-binding resolution is or what it means. Turkey is trying to get into the EU, let them deal with it. Turkey is a key alley and supporter in our war on terror, why "shoot ourselves in the foot" as the top Turkish commander stated in the Turkish press this morning? Why are the Democrats so hell bent on ending this war they have to resort to back room deals and sneaky end-a-round maneuvers to accomplish their tasks? Did not Nancy Pelosi promise a more responsible and transparent Congress? Did she not promise a more mature and bi-partisanship effort to heal the wounds of polarized politics since 2000? Was I dreaming when she stated this 110th Congress would pass the legislation that mattered to the people and would improve our lives? Well, here it is.
Democrats are now demonstrating they are not trying to improve our image abroad, but hamper it for their own political gains at home. Slap Turkey in the face when we need their help. Focus on a 1915 incident where 1.5 million people died instead of a 2007 crisis in Sudan where in the Dufar region estimates in late 2004 had the body count around 70,000, nearly half of the Armenian total and that was 3 years ago with continuing suffering, famine, warfare, and such all with active UN resolutions and actions ongoing. Why isn't the House committee of Foreign Affairs labeling Sudan as responsible for genocide for failing to stop the Dufar crisis? What about Rwanda? Why not charge the 7th Calvary with genocide for their military campaigns and tactics or the BIA for their systematic and deliberate campaigns of extermination of a peoples within their control and trust? Why, because it does not serve the selfish agenda of the Democrats in ending the war at any cost. While they continue to try to bog it down in the legislature the same way Vietnam was they are resorting to newer and dirtier tricks then before. We have enough people in the world burning the flag I defended with my life, we have enough people hating us so much they want to kill us, why add fuel and mass to this number? Why are we selling out our international image for a domestic power play similar to a kids squabble on the playground at recess? Why is the leader of the party who promised to clean up Washington and restore America's image overseas deliberately tarnishing our image with a know alley and Muslim country? Why do we keep believing the lies these people speak every 2 years and keep voting them back into office again and again and again and again and again? 10/13/2007 Democrat's anti-war back-up plan exposedAs everyone close to a television, newspaper, or internet connection this week knows there was an international mess created by the US House Foreign Affairs committee. As I have not seen connecting of the dots at this point, I will share my insight as it is very important people realize what exactly is going on with this seemingly minor non-binding resolution from the American standpoint (Turkey of course sees these vote as a huge issue!) As we all know the Democrats have been unable to do anything about the war in Iraq since taking power in the last election. The inability of being able to cut war funding, establish withdrawal timelines, prevent the surge, do anything meaningful has been a large torn in their side since their "mandate to change" of the last election, evidence by the low approval ratings of the Democratically controlled congress. Democratic frustration has grown to such a level in-fighting and bickering has made the party lose sight of its original goal and begin to eat themselves in this presidential election cycle. Now the Democratic leadership is not dumb, despite what ever people like Rush Limbaugh says, and they want to keep some kind of order and purpose. "Non-stop" Nancy vowed she would bring the Armenian resolution to the floor if it passed the committee, thereby greenlighting the Democratically controlled committee to thumb its nose at the Republicans and making their anti-war statement. This seemingly non-matter vote comes is not a hap-hazard maneuver and anyone who believes it is ignorant of how politics is orchestrated.
Politics is chess, plain and simple. Don't believe they statements that Nancy is making this measure is just symbolic and that no real harm will come between our two nations. Do you believe Nancy Pelosi's statement of that of the statements of 8 past Secretary of States who have stated "the passage would harm US security interests, including the use of bases and making it harder for US diplomats to persuade the Turkish government to stay out of Iraq." according to reports in the Boston Globe, LA Times, and Washington Post. All three point to the same scheme, Turkey has warned since the information of the vote before the Foreign Affairs commission was made that any approval would be an insult to Turkish nationalism and not tolerated. Turkey let everyone know that if this vote was approved in committee and made it before the full House there would be consequences. As these consequences were never spelled out it was made apparent it would involve current war support. Now why is America concerned with Turkeys' past and the Armenian genocide situation? Well, Turkeys' is still trying to get into the EU and while the Europeans are on top of this issue it seems America is sticking her nose into another countries business yet again. While Pelosi is smugly smiling for the camera and counting her domestic success and win she has opened an international can of worms with strategic partner vital in our operation in stabilizing Iraq and getting us out of their faster. What right does this Democratically controlled committee have saying Turkey committed genocide against the Armenians when the US government practiced even worse against my people and race for over 200 years in this country? Why are we pushing Turkey over genocide now and not the Sudanese over the Dufar region killings, which by the way is still going on now where the Ottoman Empire purge of the Armenians happened almost 100 years ago? Why not take such actions against the Northern Irish over their elimination of Catholics and practices of oppression in their control of the island nation? If people stop to ask why now and why this matters to be pushed so hard by the current Congress then look no further to a crafty way to stop the war by alienating our armed services and diminishing their logistic channels of getting troops, supplies, and gear to the battlefield. No Nancy, we did not learn the lessons of Vietnam, we are still trying to fight a war from Congress with legislation instead of on the battlefield with generals and soldiers on the ground. Turkey has recalled their ambassador, students have marched on the US embassy and painted the Turkish flag on the wall, the parliament has voted to allow military operations into Iraq for reprisal operations against the Kurds, right or wrong Turkish law condemns the calling of the Armenian incidents genocide as a crime and here we are, in the face of all this, still pushing hard on a key alley to force them into taking an action contradictory to our national interests and current national security involving ongoing military operations in an active theater of war. So here we are, Democratically controlled committees voting on non-binding resolutions condensing another countries actions a century ago in a war we had no involvement in at a time we were not a major player on the world stage or in diplomacy. By strategically eroding the cooperation of a key alley and logistic pathway into Iraq Pelosi has cleared the way to accomplish something they were unable to do directly. By alienating a key NATO alley, she has orchestrated a blow to the war effort, mission accomplished. However, she has done so at the cost of logistic and material support for our troops already in the field, opened a new front on the war, complicated our foreign relations greatly, and done so without most Americans being able to tie the two together. When the bill comes before the full House, it will be voted on, and if it passes all the efforts the Turks have made thus far will be escalated further. If any harm comes to troops in Northern Iraq, embassy personnel in Turkey, or this becomes the turning point for things worse to come, it all falls squarely on her feet. |
